L'an dernier, le Wild du Minnesota en surprenait plus d'un sur la planète hockey en échangeant l'attaquant Nino Niederreiter aux Hurricanes de la Caroline en retour du joueur de centre Victor Rask.

Ancien choix de 1ere ronde (5e total) en 2010, Niederreiter terminera la saison avec une fiche de 23 buts et 30 passes pour un total de 53 points en 82 matchs, aidant les Hurricanes à se tailler une place en séries éliminatoires et se rendre jusqu'en finale de conférence dans l'Est. Il est aujourd'hui un joueur important du top-6 de l'attaque en Caroline.

De son côté, Rask a terminé la saison avec une fiche de 3 buts et 6 passes pour un total de 9 points en 49 matchs.

Si la transaction ne faisait aucun sens à l'époque au lieu de plusieurs, elle n'en fait encore moins aujourd'hui.

Après que Paul Fenton, DG du Wild, a été congédié au cours des dernières semaines après seulement un an en poste, l'entraîneur-chef de l'équipe, Bruce Boudreau, a accepté de livrer une entrevue avec le journaliste Michael Russo de The Athletic, s'ouvrant sur l'alignement qu'il comptait envoyer dans la mêlée pour débuter la prochaine saison.

Boudreau ne s'est d'ailleurs pas gêné pour affirmer que Rask, qui possède encore 3 ans à écouler à son contrat lui rapportant la somme de 4 millions de dollars par année, ne figurait même pas parmi ses 12 attaquants réguliers présentement, exposant ainsi l'incompétence de son ancien DG.

À une époque où chaque dollar doit être savamment dépensé sur la masse salariale d'une équipe, Fenton a laissé le Wild avec un boulet majeur avant d'être remercié de ses fonctions. On comprend d'ailleurs mieux pourquoi il n'est plus DG au Minnesota.

"You know, I’ve been looking at a couple things that I put on the board. I guess before I answer that, I should make clear that a lot of it depends on how Mikko’s health is, how his leg is. In other words, are we going to have to start him slow or is he ready to go off the bat? So I’ll preface everything that a lot of this depends on Mikko and that these are things that are just going through my head in early August. Anything can change next month. But Staal will start as the No. 1 center, and I’m looking at him with Zucker and Zuccarello. On the board, I really like the look and sound of Parise, Kunin and Fiala. And then, Mikko’s health will probably determine the other combinations. It’ll probably start with Mikko or Ek with Donato and Greenway and then (Marcus) Foligno with the other center (Ek or Mikko) and Hartman with J.T. Brown and Victor Rask pushing. Well, I won’t discuss that, but it’s a conundrum, there’s no doubt about it. This is probably the first time ever since Rask’s rookie season that he’s come in being a complete underdog. I guess we’ll have to see how hard he worked in the summer and how much stronger he got, all of those things are going to be a huge thing as far as he goes. Again, he could make it very tough for a lot of people out there."
