Les Penguins forcés de compléter une autre transaction!

Les Penguins de Pittsburgh ont été particulièrement actifs cet été, échangeant l'attaquant Phil Kessel et le défenseur Olli Maatta en plus d'acquérir les attaquants Alex Galchenyuk, Dominik Kahun et Brandon Tanev ainsi que le défenseur Pierre-Olivier Joseph.

Mais il semblerait que le DG Jim Rutherford prépare une autre transaction. C'est lui-même qui l'a avoué au journaliste Josh Yohe de The Athletic lors d'une récente entrevue.

De son aveu même, Rutherford a affirmé vouloir signer le jeune défenseur Marcus Pettersson, acquis des Ducks d'Anaheim l'an dernier en retur de l'attaquant Daniel Sprong, à un contrat à long terme. Seul problème, ce nouveau contrat placera les Pens dans une situation précaire sur la masse salariale. C'est pourquoi il complétera une autre transactions dans un avenir rapproché pour libérer de l'espace salariale en vue de la prochaine saison.

Reste maintenant à voir quel joueur régulier de l'équipe sera cette fois sacrifié. [pub]

Marcus Pettersson remains without a contract, but Rutherford isn’t concerned. A deal will be completed soon, he said.

“We could just go with a qualifying offer,” Rutherford said. “But that’s not what we want to do. That’s why there’s a hold-up. There’s a deal that we really want to get done with him.”

In other words, the Penguins really, really like Pettersson and want to lock him into a long-term contract. Both sides are willing, but the Penguins need to free salary cap space in order to sign him to such a deal.

Rutherford doesn’t seem concerned about Pettersson’s current status.

“We’re on top of the situation,” Rutherford said. “It will get done. It’s not going to be a problem.”

• Of course, to get it done, the Penguins likely need to trade a player from the current roster.

Just when that will happen, however, is unclear.

“We’re probably going to have to do something,” Rutherford said. “It’s just tough to say when it will happen because of the time of year. Sometimes, this time of year, things take a long time to come together. Other times, you don’t think you have anything, and then it happens very quickly. So we’ll see.”
